What is Astrology?

What is Astrology?

For thousands of years, humans have craned their necks and looked to the sky in wonder and awe. The night sky is full of twinkling lights that stay fixed in the sky throughout our lifetime, while others travel across the landscape as wanderers. These wanderers are the planets that are visible from our earth’s perspective. The planets are the main characters in Astrology. Whether you see them with your naked eye, view through a telescope or an app on your phone, they are constantly traveling across the sky and dancing through the cosmos.

Astrology is the study of meaningful correlations between celestial objects, such as planets, asteroids and more, with earthly events. When looking at an astrological chart, we always want to see what zodiac sign the planets are in. You may have heard of Sun signs, but there are many other planets and placements that make up a whole chart. A common misconception of the study of Astrology is that having a certain planet in a certain place influences one’s behavior but that is not what Astrology tries to define. It is taking a snapshot of the sky at any given moment in time and connecting it with what is happening here on Earth. Astrology is concerned with meaning and patterns found through the cycles of time in relation to how it affects human beings in a personal way.

We all have a unique moment in time when we took our first breath on this Earth. It is in this moment that you are given a snapshot of your life’s path that is like a fingerprint, there are no others like it except for yours. Your birth chart will only repeat once every 26,000 years. It is yours and understanding your own Astrology can uncover many patterns and distinct qualities of your personality. Again, it is not that the planets in the signs influence your behavior and actions, but it is the comparison of what is happening in the sky and the events that are happening around you at any given time.

Astrology has been around for thousands of years and there are many different kinds of Astrology's. Here at Jenny of the Sun, I am a Western Astrologer using the Tropical Zodiac. There are so many uses for Astrology, it really isn’t something to “believe” in, as if it’s a type of religion or spiritual belief. That is a common misconception. It is a language that helps to explain our life's journey through the 12 archetypes (signs Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and so on) that make up the zodiac. It’s like following the weather patterns. You might know during a certain time of the year it is likely to rain daily. You could have an umbrella handy, dress accordingly, or alter your outdoor plans. Knowing this information is helpful but you do not have to bring an umbrella with you. You can choose to get wet or take your chances, after all, the wind may blow, and the storm may shift and it may not rain at all. Astrologers love to look back at what happened in the past to see how things may be affected in the here and now and in the future to come. Some predictions get validated while others pass by without significance. Whether you believe in Astrology or not does not matter, the planets will continue to do their dance across the stage of the night sky and Astrologers will continue to correlate their positions with events happening here and now on our beautiful Earth.
